Dear Friends,
Well here we are, 2008, and CALPULLI is going
strong and only getting stronger. We could not
have gotten here without your participation
and support. I thank you from the bottom of
my heart.
In 2008 we will keep striving for excellence
in performing, continue providing dancers and
community members with opportunities of leadership
training and keep bringing the arts and arts
education to hundreds of children and their
parents.

Last year was busy, but that was nothing compared
to 2008. We have three major performances in
the tri-state area, a month-long commitment
with the Festival of Nations in Tennessee and
several school residencies and workshops. It
is also a year of new projects. We are developing
a non-traditional dance-theatre piece about
the immigrant experience in New York, currently
titled Dance for a Dollar. We are also
doing research on the Raramuri, the natives
of the Sierra Tarahumara in the state of Chihuahua.
And, if we find the time in December, we'll
put on a Pastorela, a traditional Christmas
theatre piece involving company members, the
children's classes as well as community and
professional actors.
On the Administration side, we have started
to look for a permanent home (any ideas and
assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated)
and to strengthen our infrastructure to ensure
we will be there for you and the community in
the future.
Please stay in touch with us as our year promises
to be full of change and strength. I look forward
to hearing from you and I hope you will join
us as CALPULLI celebrates its 5th anniversary
this October.

New Project in 2008 |
|
|
One of the company's new Works in 2008 is Tarahumara: Dances
of the Raramuri, Natives of the Sierra in Northern Mexico.
The work will be based on new research and choreographies
developed by Francisco Flores with the Ballet Folklorico de
Cd. Juarez in the early 1970's. Calpulli will collaborate
with master teachers in Mexico. In addition, Calpulli seeks
to bring these powerful dances to New York City audiences
with open workshops and a sneak preview at the Fridays at
Noon series at the 92nd St Y Harkness Dance Center on February
29th. Look for announcements shortly for open workshops in
Manhattan and Queens. |
